Coastal Road Belize
As part of a major national infrastructure upgrade, the Government of Belize initiated the redevelopment of the 59 km Coastal Road to improve connectivity, safety, and sustainability. To meet the project’s vision for an energy-efficient and reliable roadway lighting system, Project Lighting Solutions was contracted to design, supply, and install solar-powered lighting assemblies and poles along the entire length of the road.
The Challenge
The 59 km Coastal Road runs through remote areas with no access to the national power grid. The project required a reliable, solar-powered lighting solution that could operate year-round in Belize’s tropical conditions. The system had to meet roadway safety standards, resist corrosion and vandalism, and function with minimal maintenance or operating costs.
Our Solution
Project Lighting Solutions developed a tailored solar lighting system designed specifically for the conditions of the Coastal Road. Each unit included high-efficiency solar panels, energy storage batteries, LED luminaires, and durable galvanized steel poles engineered for corrosion resistance. The design was optimized for uniform light distribution, ensuring visibility and safety for motorists and pedestrians while minimizing light pollution. The solar assemblies were selected to provide continuous operation throughout the night, even during extended periods of overcast weather. All components were chosen for durability in the face of high humidity, heavy rainfall, and strong coastal winds.
The Installation
Our team managed the full installation process, from the secure foundation work for the poles to the precise mounting and wiring of each solar assembly. Installation was carried out in phases to coordinate with ongoing road construction, ensuring no delays to the overall project schedule. Strict quality control procedures were implemented at every stage to guarantee compliance with both engineering specifications and client requirements.
The Design
Warm color temperatures were chosen to complement the natural wood tones and maintain a sacred ambiance. Each fixture was discreetly installed to preserve the building’s visual integrity during the day. The result is a subtle yet powerful nighttime presence that honors the Cathedral’s heritage.
The Result
The completed Coastal Road lighting system now provides safe, sustainable illumination along the entire 59 km route. The solar-powered assemblies operate fully off-grid, eliminating electricity costs and reducing environmental impact. The new lighting enhances nighttime visibility, supports road safety, and extends the usable hours for travel and commerce along the route.
